Enhancing Health Through Exercise Physiology

Charles Simpson

Greetings, welcome to Med-Ex, my name is Dr Charles Simpson, lead physiologist at this practice. At this practice we believe future medicine is already here, it is shaped by less-invasive procedures, providing intelligent information on key health metrics. My background involves a decade of research in exercise prescription and physiology. This began with a Masters degree in peptide and physiology research at Canterbury Uni, followed by further post-graduate studies, in clinical exercise physiology in Melbourne Australia. I completed a PhD scholarship at the School of Clinical Medicine, Prince of Wales Hospital at the Medical Faculty of UNSW, running a number of clinical trials. My and Med-Ex’s specialisation is in monitored exercise prescription for clinical populations and the non-invasive measurement of physiological biomarkers for cardiorenal, pulmonary, vascular and function health (mobility) of patients, but also include those that have health challenges of any kind.

I work with medical professionals to provide safe and monitored exercise that is essential for health and wellbeing in seniors in particular. I do this by providing safe exercise prescription along with risk assessment for major disease categories, that can take as little as 30 minutes to provide insight for other clinical specialists. I aim to aid the health and independent living for NZ seniors, believing strongly that appropriate, “tailored exercise is medicine”. The clinical techniques used to monitor patient progress are wherever possible gold-standard. I personally am proactively involved in biochemical and exercise physiology research at Canterbury and Lincoln universities respectively, associated with the Free Radical Biochemistry and Exercise and Sports Science laboratories. This research to practice enables me to apply the latest scientific technologies and practices to support your health journey and assist wherever possible in improving your health.

I am fortunate to have a family background in medicine and would like to acknowledge those who have gone before me helping  pave the way for the more advanced medical services we know today. My Grandmother Dr Dorthy Simpson, one of the first female doctors in New Zealand (graduate from Trinity College in Dublin), was a co-founder of the NZ Woman’s Medical Association and an uncle Dr John Campbell (GP) extended my grandmothers successful medical practice in Redcliffs in Christchurch. As such I place great importance on patient wellbeing and look forward to continuing a similar practical excellence. I  look forward to assisting you in achieving your health goals soon.
